AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR AMERICAN SAMOA AND INDEPENDENT SAMOA
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PAGO PAGO AS
158 PM SST FRI MAY 19 2017

.SHORT TERM...
TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT...A SURFACE TROUGH OVER THE ISLANDS
WILL PRODUCE SCATTERED SHOWERS AND POSSIBLE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS
THE ISLANDS TONIGHT. SATELLITE IMAGERIES SHOW A LINE OF
CONVECTIONS TO THE NORTHEAST AND EAST SLOWLY MOVING TOWARDS THE
ISLAND CHAIN. RAOB FROM THIS AFTERNOON DEPICTS A CONDITIONAL
UNSTABLE PROFILE. A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE TO THE SOUTHEAST IS
SLOWLY MIGRATING EASTWARD. BREEZY EAST WINDS HAVE SHIFTED AND
DIMINISHED TO THE NORTHEAST WITH GENTLE CONDITIONS. THEREFORE
EXPECT SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS WITH GENTLE NORTHEAST WINDS
DURING THE SHORT TERM.

.LONG TERM...
MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...THE SURFACE TROUGH WILL REMAIN OVER THE
ISLANDS BEFORE MOVING SOUTH SOUTHEAST ON TUESDAY. SCATTERED
SHOWERS WILL REMAIN OVER THE TERRITORY UNTIL TUESDAY NIGHT. AS THE
SURFACE TROUGH MOVES FARTHER SOUTHEAST...SHOWERS WILL THEN SUBSIDE
TO ISOLATED ON WEDNESDAY. EXPECT SHOWERS TO REDUCE DURING THE
MIDWEEK AND VARIABLE WINDS ACROSS THE ISLANDS ON TUESDAY.

&&

.MARINE...
SEAS HAVE SUBSIDED 7 TO 9 FT AS DEPICTED BY THE AUNUU BUOY. MODELS
SUGGEST THAT SEAS WILL CONTINUE TO DROP BELOW ADVISORY LEVELS ON
SUNDAY MORNING. HOWEVER...ANOTHER SET OF STRONG SOUTH SWELLS ARE
EXPECTED TO BUILD SEAS 7 TO 9 FT ON MONDAY MORNING. SEAS WILL
FURTHER BUILD 9 TO 12 FT ON TUESDAY MORNING.

&&

.PPG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL SATURDAY NIGHT.
SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL SATURDAY NIGHT.
