Why Lib Dem on May 2nd?
A New Direction for Cambridge
In May 2000 the people of Cambridge elected a Liberal Democrat Council
for the first time. We promised to set a new direction for the city, based
on clear political priorities about making Cambridge a place to
be proud of:
-
concentrating on providing better basic services. After 20 years
of neglect under Labour things were so bad that immediately after the election
we began an emergency programme to clean up Cambridge and restore
services that had been cut.
-
taking action on the environment and transport, issues of
great public concern in Cambridge.
-
making more effective the Council's work in housing, leisure
and community services.
-
making the Council more accountable and more welcoming to the people it
represents, and working in partnership with the community to deliver
shared goals.
-
listening and providing leadership to make people more confident and
hopeful about what local government means to you and your neighbours.
-
playing a central role in planning for the future development of
Cambridge and its sub-region.
-
always putting service to the public first. The community as a whole
and every individual in it are important. You pay and you matter.
We called this programme A New Broom for Cambridge because
it meant sweeping away old attitudes and prejudices. After two years the
signs are that you are pleased with the progress we have made:
-
residents' satisfaction with the overall performance of the Council increased
from 71% to 77% during 2000. This places Cambridge in the top 25% of Councils
nationally and we believe it reflects a new spirit of partnership between
the Council and the community
-
a recent survey by the CSV has shown that 92% of residents feel that the city's public areas are clean
-
the Council's first ever budget consultation exercise in autumn 2001 confirmed
that our policies are closely in line with your top priorities for action
- street and waste services, transport and the environment
Now we are asking you to elect us again so that we can make further
progress. We hope that reading this manifesto will help you to make up
your mind.
