Beddome Family Bible

Genealogists always love family bibles! Unfortunately, this one belongs to the branch of the family descended from Boswell Brandon Beddome rather than my branch. It seems to have belonged to Boswell Brandon Boswell as the first page gives the death of "My beloved wife, Anne Beddome" when talking about the births of Boswell's children. It looks from the handwriting as if all the children's births were written at the same time. Then there is the signiture and book plate of Dr. John Reynolds Beddome on page 2. Page 4 gives the children of Dr. John Reynolds Beddome, and refers to his wife as "My beloved wife Rebecca Beddome", and here, the handwriting looks as if the births were not recorded together - perhaps they were written as they happened (John's children were born after the death of his father, Boswell). Page 3 gives a direction to Samuel Beddome (who outlived Dr. John Reynolds Beddome, and was the last surviving son of Boswell Brandon Boswell). However, there is no information about Samuel Beddome, or his family. There is information about another son, William Wilkins Beddome, and his family, on pages 5 and 6. Page 5 looks as if all the information was written at the same time. Page 6 has quite a lot of notes, in different handwritings, showing an attempt to keep family information up to date.

This all suggests that the bible was bought by Boswell Brandon Beddome (1763-1816), who wrote his own (existing) family in it. The bible then passed to Dr. John Reynolds Beddome (1787-1859) who added his children as they were born. He seems to have wanted it to pass to Samuel Beddome (1791-1866), the last surviving son. There is nothing written by Samuel (who did marry and have children of his own), so either Samuel did not accept the bible, or after his death, it was passed to the family of William Wilkins Beddome (1788-1858). These added all the children of William (already born), and other people added more information as it happened.

Please note that of the children of Boswell Brandon Beddome, there is nothing (apart from the births) of his sons Samuel and Boswell (1794-1834), or his daughters. Family bibles give useful information, but it is not necessarily complete!

These are photocopies. The originals were pages torn from the family bible, obviously because of the information on them. My parents photocopies were A3 sheets, two pages for a sheet. I assume that these were the 'spread' of the book, open to view. Obviously people wrote on available blank pages. Click on any page for a larger view.
