The census returns of 1851 show that Margaret Geddes lived with her uncle John Geddes (IV) for at least some of her childhood.
In 1860 Margaret Geddes married James Alexander Vernor (1805-1866). He came from Inveresk with Musselburgh, Midlothian, and was the son of Captain Robert Vernor of the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), who was severely wounded at the Battle of Waterloo.
They had one son, Alexander Vernor (1864-1888).
J.A.Vernor died in 1866. Street directories show that she then lived at 15 Salisbury Road until 1872. Several of the Geddes family had lived there, including Margaret, before her marriage (see census returns).
She married John Legat, a banker in 1874.
Margaret looked after her niece, Violet Alice Geddes as her parents were abroad. Violet's father, Andrew David Geddes , was a soldier. When Margaret died, she bequeathed to Violet her personal effects, including her lace. This included her own wedding veil made of Limerick lace (see right). Violet used this veil for her own wedding. It was also used for the weddings of her grand-daughter (me) and my niece (the great, great, great neice of Margaret Geddes).
