Charles I
Charles I believed in the divine right of kings to rule, like his father James I. He came into conflict with Parliament, over illegal taxes and the abuse of power. Eventually Charles and Parliament went to war. This is called the English Civil War. There have been several previous civil wars in England, such as Stephen and Matilda or the War of the Roses.

There were several battles. The Parliamentarian army under Oliver Cromwell (see right) was successful. Eventually Charles was captured, tried for treason, and beheaded in 1649.
