In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense, which inspired the American War of Independence (which is called American Revolutionary War in USA). From 1775 to 1783, British colonies in parts of North America fought Britain to gain their independence. The first President of the new United States of America was George Washington (see right).

In 1789, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the Romantic poets, wrote Lyrical Ballads, including the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
In 1800, the Act of Union 1800 merged Ireland and Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. A new flag was created, which combined the old British flag from the reign of Anne with the flag of St Patrick (Ireland). This is the Union flag, although it is often called the Union Jack.
