Derivation:From "amethystos" (Greek) not drunk
Description: Purple transparent or translucent. You can get the normal quartz hexagonal crystals, or massive pieces (that aren't crystals). Sometimes the pieces are banded with white, which looks attractive (see below).

Amethyst Purple quartz is called Amethyst. The Greeks believed that amethysts prevented intoxication. Sometimes they made drinking cups out of it! This belief gives Amethyst its name (see the derivation above).
