Derivation:From "granum" (Latin) grain
Description: Rather a spotty rock! Granite is made of several different minerals, and you can see the individual grains of these (hence its derivation).

Edniburgh Granite Granite is made up of different minerals, including feldspar, quartz and mica. It sometimes glitters because of the quartz and mica.

It is very hard. It can be used in building (the photograph is of some buildings in Edinburgh).
