Smokey Quartz

Smokey Quartz

Smokey quartz can be a range of colours. Yellow-brown and grey-brown quartz are called Cairngorms. Brown-black quartz (like this one) is called Morion. This may come from the Greek for baneful or hideous. I don't think it's that bad!

Ferruginous Quartz

Ferruginous Quartz

Ferruginous quartz is opaque and coloured by iron. Not all quartz is beautiful!
Rainbow Quartz

Iris Quartz

Quartz quite often has rainbows in. Citrine seems to be good at this. Iris was the goddess of the rainbow, so it is an obvious name. This specimen shows how quartz crystals can twin. In fact, you often get many crystals all growing side by side (see amethyst). Sometimes, one crystal gets split off to sell, like the Smoky Quartz.

Aqua Aura

Aqua aura

This is called aqua aura. It is not a natural colour. It is quartz heated with gold dust. This produces a lovely blue colour.
