Named after serpents
A patterned rock, or different colours. This specimen is a red pattern on black background.
Serpentine is called after serpents, because the patterns in the rock looked like snakes. The ancients used it as an amulet against snakebite.
Serpentine is used as a decorative stone. It is also used in Shona sculpture from Zimbabwe.
