In fact, you can have a good rummage around your store cupboard and see what you can find! Not too many flavourings at once, though, or they will either overwhelm in taste, or cancel each other out.
Watch out if you use sugar. Sugar and vinegar make a sweet and sour taste, but cooked sugar can burn.
