Examples of tessellations - Optical illusions

Index --- grids --- squares (examples) --- triangles (examples) --- Escher-style (examples) --- for teachers

All these illusions were made online using the square tessellation designer or the triangular tessellation designer.

For more information and plenty more examples, see Optical Illusions & Visual Phenomena by Michael Bach - a splendid website!

Phantom dots appear between the squares. Stare hard at this for a minute. Then close your eyes, and you will see red squares on a green background.

The blue lines are parallel. (Oh yes, they are!) The vertical lines are straight. (Honest!)

It won't stay still! Are these red squares on a yellow background, or yellow squares on a red background?

Can you see the yellow squares? (But they aren't there!) I'm not quite sure what this does, but it looks pretty!

Both yellows are the same shade. Is the yellow or the green on top of the cubes?
